Maybe this is just me but I find myself in need of a good loaf of bread for dinner on the exact days that I have no BREAD in the house. No refriegarted pie crust to twist into bread, no cresecent rolls or biscuits for that matter. Nothing. On a day like this there are only two options. One- get my lazy butt into the car and go to the store (for the 12th time this week) or Two: make a easy breezy but delicious loaf of bread using what little time I have and what little ingredients I may have.
Option Two was taken last week and when the need arose for a loaf of bread for my new ultimate steak salad (recipe will be here next week). I had a little over 3 hours to spare and little man was asleep so I thought let’s give this a whirl. When I need a go to recipe that is no fail and I am positive will be delicious I always head to my cookbook selection of church recipes compiled by none other than your old church ladies. Why is it they make the best darn stuff? What did they know back then that we don’t know now. I mean, they didn’t have the internet to google a recipe or even a cell phone to call and ask a friend. They just had their good sense and lessons learned from their mothers. Something to be said about that. Something to be said…………
So without further ado I would like to present you with an amazingly simple bread recipe twisted up with my addition of jalapeños and cheddar cheese for the ultimate quick bread. It is savory, a tad sweet with a touch of heat. It’s moist and chewy and perfect for lunch or as a side with your next salad or pasta dish. Enjoy and remember we all knew how to cook before the internet and food blogs were here. Just get in there and be fearless. Give a recipe your best shot and improvise as you go. Those are the best dishes- the ones created just by you!

Quick Jalapeño Cheese Bread
Ingredients: (Methodist Church Cookbook)
4 cups AP flour
1 package of rapid rise yeast
1 1/2 cups warm water
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp sugar
4 ounces of cheddar cheese
2 jalapeños seed and diced or 2 tsp of diced canned jalapeños
1 TBSP chopped dill
Directions:
Sift together the dry ingredients (including seasonings) and set aside.
In the bowl of your stand mixer or mixing bowl, place the yeast and 1/2 cup of warm water in bottom of the bowl and allow to sit until the yeast has dissolved. Now add the remaining warm water along with the dry ingredients. Stir with a wooden spoon or using the dough hook in your stand mixer until the dough comes together and forms a ball. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Allow to sit for 1 hour until doubled in size.
Meanwhile, mix together your cheese, jalapeños and herbs into a small bowl and set aside.
Now divide the dough into 10-12 balls and flatten each ball. In the middle of each ball place a heaping spoonful of the cheese, jalapeño and herb mixture. Fold the dough horizontally and seal it along the edges with a fork or just your hand. Place seam side up in a greased loaf pan and repeat process until all the dough has been done.
Rest for 10-15 minutes at room temperature then brush with butter and pop into the oven at 375 for 35-40 minutes.

Bonnie
I could sit down (or stand!) and eat this whole loaf!
Yum! I’m with Maris. I could eat this whole loaf!
Good morning! I’m your newest follower! I saw you over at Tomatoes on the Vine and thought I’d pop over to see what was “cooking.!” I’m looking forward reading your other posts!
Your bread looks delicious and I can’t believe I have all the ingredients! So, guess what I’m going to try making! I think this would be perfect for a Mexican meal, and I know my husband will love it!
When you have a moment, please check out my recent post on King Arthur Flour, as a baker I think you’ll like it. I love company and new friends are always welcome. I’ve really enjoyed my visit today. Thank you.
Mary
What a beautiful loaf! No, it’s not just you… I find myself craving bread EVERY night! Whether or not I have any at home.
okay…Yum!
Looks excellent, I will borrow this idea soon. An inside out pizza:)
Oh, wow! How adventurous and delicious this looks! A must-try, if ever I’ve seen one. Thanks for the great pix and sharing. Love your site!

wow! this looks so good baby mama! 🙂
This looks fantastic! My husband is like obsessed with jalapenos. I am definitely making this the next time we have the guys over. I know it will be a hit!
Yum, I love home baked bread and yours is perfect. I love cheese and jalapeno!
This looks great! Our daughter loves bread kike this so I am going to share this recipe with her. Just nothing like home baked bread!!
oooh, how can anyone resist a bread with cheese in it??
Seriously, there’s nothing better in my opinion than using a few quiet hours to bake, or prepare a make-ahead meal. I love using what we have, and not stressing about having to rush.
I’m making the lime corn tonight and the veggie burgers soon!
This is an amazing bread. Who could resist it. Thanks!
Chili and cheese.. WHO can resist? Not me for sure! I can sit and pull that bread apart and eat slowly….. ahhhhhhhh
This looks insanely good. The gooey cheese center … are you kidding me! Why is it the church ladies have all the tricks? My mother in law just gave me her junior league cookbooks and there is some seriously good gems in there! I am so jealous of your few hours to bake. I wonder when I will have that again.
That bread looks sooooo good! You’re right, those church lady recipes are tried and true 🙂
Jalapenos & cheese make me smile! I would love a huge chunk of that loaf of bread… and yes, little old church ladies are the best chefs out there 🙂 Thanks for sharing this recipe!
Love, love, LOVE this! I can’t stop staring at that last picture! YUMMY!
i made something quite similar to this once and ate the WHOLE thing.
My dad LOVES bread like this, that he normally buys from the store. I’m going to make it for him for Father’s Day! Thanks for the recipe- perfect timing!
How could I have lived in thte states for over 40 years and have never eaten this bread? Extremely yum. I think if i had I’d be duplicating Summer’s commen. 🙂
This looks just amazing. I’ve been working so much and gardening so much, I’m seriously deficient at bread making as of late. As in I haven’t made any! This would be so great alone, with chili, with soup, or even just a simple grilled chicken or pork dish.
Yum! I hardly ever take the time to make bread, but this one looks do-able and delicious!! And I agree about church ladies–I have some hand-me-down church cookbooks from my mom and grandma, and there’s some great stuff in there!
It looks and sounds wonderful.
Looks delicious and amazing! I’ve had the exact same problem of needing good bread when I have nothing in sight that would come close. I’ll have to tag this recipe for the next time that happens!
Yum, thanks for linking with the Hearth n Soul hop!
YUM, Jess! I’ll take a loaf when you come home for the 4th. :))
Your bread looks fantastic! Jalapenos and cheese! Yummy! Thanks for sharing this lovely recipe!
That would be my dream…. no bread at home and you can just make this delicious bread…. My only option is “give up” if I don’t want to go to the store. This looks great. For a non-baker point of view, it seems time consuming…but there is nothing better than warm bread out of the oven. Very nice recipe!
What an incredible loaf! I love that you divide it up into balls and stuff yumminess in them before putting it altogether into a loaf. Fabulous.
🙂 Mandy
I have such a hard time when it comes to bread…I’ve got to practice more I think. This looks like one I can get my arms around – and it looks delicious! My husband would especially love this bread.
Hi Dear, The cheese bread is looking AWESOME. I just cant resist having it over and thoroughly enjoyed it virtually. I need to muster courage and master the art of baking breads at home. Hats off to you…cheers, sonia !
I love the sound of jalapenos and cheese in bread… I just bought some spelt flour today to bake a loaf…Wonder, if I can add these 2 gorgeous ingredients to spelt to have a yummy loaf…
Beautiful blog…I have lots of reading to do here…

This looks gooooooood! And I bet the smell was amazing!
Nom, nom, nom. This is carb heaven.
Now that’s a delicious looking loaf of bread. Good thing this isn’t in my kitchen right now or I’d be tempted to eat the entire loaf after work!
This looks ridiculously good! I think I could eat the entire loaf in one sitting!
PERFECT! I am also a huge fan of church cookbooks!
Great recipe! The loaf sounds irresistible 🙂
Those old church ladies DEFINITELY knew what they were talking about because this looks awesome! Can’t go wrong with cheese-stuffed bread. you just can’t.
Jalapeno and cheese! Wow you cant go wrong with that! I found a couple of those church cookbooks at a garage sale! Based on this recipe, I guess I better look at those books a bit closer! The technique is very clever and I’m sure the possibilities are endless! Have a great weekend.
I enjoy paging through cookbooks from decades gone by—they tell such a tale of what we were eating, what the current trend was, and the favored ingredients.
Often I’ll find a good tried-and-true recipe–like you did with this spicy-cheesy yeast bread! looks delish—nice work!
I am feeling tremendously gluttonous while drooling over this bread!!! Oh my gosh, I want this entire loaf in my mouth and tummy right now!!!! Please come on over and share on my weekend foodie blog hop, if you have a moment. This needs to be seen by the entire world of foodies!!!! Way to GO!
P.S. Do you have an email button to forward your posts that I can click on and send to my email box? I couldn’t find one, but maybe I’m looking in the wrong place! PS: Superb photography also! Roz
THis looks insanely good. i don’t know how you wow me everytime but you do! Keep it up- you are awesome
Bread, cheese, jalapenos- what is there not to love! Amazing. Doing this tonight- will let you know how it goes. wish me luck though because I am not the best with bread! LOL!
Great recipe and blog! I’m over from Fresh Foodie Friday and am your newest follower!
One of my favourite breads is a jalapeno cheese. Love it.
OK, I really should try this. It looks like some of the best bread I’ve ever seen. I think I’ve told you, you should do a cookbook, but I’m thinking like bakery or cute little restaurant would also work 🙂
Hi Jessica, Like I said above in another comment…..superb bread recipe. It was featured today in this week’s Fresh Food Friday/Seasonal Saturday link-up. I hope that you can stop by and grab the ‘featured’ badge and hope also that you’ll share another great recipe. I do so love the lasagna roll-ups and wanted to feature those too, but I already had 6 features! Have a lovely weekend! Roz
oo look at those pockets of cheesy goodness in the bread!
I love your blog! Thank you for being my SRC inspiration!
