Classic Crab Cakes with Remoulade Sauce

Most everyone has had a crab cake at some point in their life. Crab cakes are easy to make and easy to eat. They are perfect all by themselves and even better over a nice refreshing salad. Now I am a little picky when it comes to my crab cake. Too much seasoning and or too many bread crumbs tend to overpower the succulent rich lump crab meat and this does not fair well with me:)) For that reason the simpler the seasonings the better.

The key when it comes to the perfect crab cake is the amount of actual crab in each.  For that reason I typically use over 1/2 cup more lump crab then most recipes call for. I love this recipe because it is simple with the classic crab cake flavor woven throughout.  The touch of  lemon zest and juice is just the right amount to bring a fresh flavor to the crab and pairs nicely with the parsley and basil. It’s a must try dinner for your whole family.

  • ¼ cup diced celery
  • 2 TBSP chopped parlsey
  • 2 TBSP chopped basil
  • 3 TBSP mayo
  • 2 tsp brown spicy mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • ½ tsp cracked black pepper
  • ½ tsp garlic powder
  • ¼ tsp cayenne pepper
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 tsp lemon zest
  • Juice of ½ lemon
  • 2 large eggs
  • ¼ cup regular bread crumbs
  • ½ cup panko
  • Canola oil, for cooking
  • Remoulade Sauce:
  • 1 tsp Horseradish sauce
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 cup Mayo
  • 2 TBSP Dijon mustard
  • 1 TBSP chopped parsley
  • 2 TBSP green onions
  • 2 TBSP sweet pickles
  • 2 TBSP lemon juice
  • 1 tsp Cajun seasoning
  • 1 tsp hot sauce
Instructions
  1. Directions:
  2. Gently combine the crab meat, celery and remaining 11 ingredients in a large bowl. Gently stir in the eggs until thoroughly combined and then add in the bread crumbs. Shape into 6-8 crab cakes and place on a baking sheet. Cover and refrigerate the cakes for at least 1 hour up to 4 hours.
  3. Heat a large cast iron skillet to medium heat with 2-3 TBSP of canola oil. Once the oil is hot, place the cakes in the pan and cook 3-3 minutes per side until slightly crispy and golden brown.
  4. Stir together ingredients for remoulade and serve alongside the crab cakes.

Having grown up in Maryland, I’m still addicted to Old Bay. I love this remoulade sauce.

    1. Kitchen Belleicious

Old Bay is the best! It is great and I seriously don’t cook with it or my Slap your mama cajun seasoning! The name is too cute too!:)

Man, it’s been so long since I’ve used crab- it’s just so expensive in Australia! But it’s one of my favourite seafoods, so I don’t know why I don’t just break out sometimes… Lovely the green chillie and crab pairing, too, Belle. x

  19. Nami | Just One Cookbook

Ohhhhhhhhh! You put so much thoughts into these crab cakes and these must be so good! Or more like perfect. You measure the ratio, sauce, and the picture of you cutting half.. I just stare at them for a long time. Looking super delicious! It’s so strange – I don’t even like horseradish yet my mouth watered by looking at the cake with the sauce. LOL. Seriously, these are great!!
